Water Heater Guide 2025: selection, installation, and maintenance

Water Heater: How to Choose the Right One, Where to Install It, and How to Keep It Efficient
When it comes to home comfort, the water heater is one of those things we often take for granted... until it stops working. And then? Cold water and panic.
To avoid that, it’s important to choose the right model, install it correctly, and do a bit of maintenance. In this guide, we’ll explain everything in simple terms.
How Many Liters Do You Really Need?
The first question people ask is: what capacity should the water heater have? It depends on the number of people in the house and how you use it. Here’s an easy table to remember:
People in the household | | Recommended liters |
---|---|
1 person | | 30–50 liters |
2 people | | 50–80 liters |
3–4 people | | 80–100 liters |
Large families | | 100 liters or more |
If you only use the water heater for the sink or kitchen, 10–30 liters is enough. For a daily shower, go above 50 liters.

Where Should a Water Heater Be Installed?
The location also matters. Here are the basic rules to get it right.
Electric Water Heater
- Can be installed in the bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room
- Requires a safe, properly grounded power outlet
- Must be mounted on sturdy walls (or with suitable brackets)
Gas Water Heater
- If installed indoors, air vents and a flue are required
- If installed outdoors, choose a sealed or frost-protected model
- Must be installed by a certified technician (DM 37/08 regulation)
Remember: to qualify for reduced VAT and tax bonuses, the installation must be certified!
